Empowering Your Team
Forming a Ownership-Based Team
Here comes a time in everyone’s career as a leader, that they need to make the decision whether to continue being the “boss” and making all the decisions or allow the team to own their work and begin to make some of their own decisions. While being in control is often considered a safe place, it puts limits on the growth of the team as well as productivity. The best way for teams to perform at their highest level is to have trust among teammates, which allows them to make decisions and come up with ideas independently.
Why It is Important to Empower Employees
When employees feel their opinions are needed and can be empowered to make their own decisions, they will work to their maximum efficiency. When all decisions must be approved through one source, the amount of work done is at a slower pace, decreases motivation, and decreases creativity. When employees feel they have no control over the results of their work, they start focusing on just doing everything as the steps are outlined to them in the directions.
When employees feel empowered to take ownership of their work, they will start to look for ways to solve problems for the years to come, share new ideas with coworkers, and take ownership of their work. These characteristics of employees create a more productive team environment.
